Reopening on 4 September, 06:30 to 12:00

S.I.F.A.S. resumes skiing on the Gentili glacier on Friday 4 September 2026, daily from 06:30 to 12:00, citing the fallen temperatures. Operations had been suspended since 15 August. The short morning window is deliberate: it uses the state the night leaves behind.

As of 15 August 2026. Always check the current situation with the resort.

Stilfserjoch / Passo dello Stelvio lies in the Südtirol region and is a small, family-run ski area: 20 kilometres of piste served by 8 lifts.

The area runs from 2757 to 3450 metres above sea level, giving around 693 metres of vertical. That takes the terrain above the 3,000-metre mark, which markedly improves snow reliability on the upper slopes.

Stilfserjoch / Passo dello Stelvio is one of the few areas in the Alps with skiing in summer: the season runs 30 May – 1 November, carried by the glacier.

An adult day pass costs EUR 48.

Of note: A pure summer ski area with no winter operation: the pass road is closed in winter. Since 10 August 2026 the only area in the Alps still skiing in high summer.

What sets this ski area apart

The Stilfser Joch, in Italian the Passo dello Stelvio, lies at 2757 metres on the border between South Tyrol and Lombardy. The pass road up from Prad, with its 48 numbered hairpins, counts among the most spectacular in the Alps and is closed in winter.

For us the pass is interesting for another reason: on the glacier above it, skiing still takes place in summer. That makes the Stelvio one of the very last summer ski areas in the Alps, and in our list the only one still open in August.

How it came about that almost everyone else gave up is set out on our glacier page and in the chronicle of closed summer ski areas.

Frequently asked about Stilfserjoch / Passo dello Stelvio

How high is Stilfserjoch / Passo dello Stelvio?

The ski area runs from 2,757 to 3,450 metres above sea level, a vertical range of 693 metres. For snow reliability the lower figure matters more: that is where the snow disappears first, and where a mild December is felt before it is felt at the top.

How many kilometres of piste does Stilfserjoch / Passo dello Stelvio have?

20 kilometres on 8 lifts, according to the operator. There is no binding standard for measuring piste kilometres, so the figure is comparable between resorts only to a point. The lift count says at least as much about how big a place feels.

What does a day pass at Stilfserjoch / Passo dello Stelvio cost?

EUR 48 for an adult day pass at the standard rate, as of summer 2026. Booked early it is often less; on a peak Saturday it is not.

When is Stilfserjoch / Passo dello Stelvio open?

The usual season window is 30 May – 1 November. No starting date has been announced for winter 2026/27 yet. Most resorts commit only in the autumn, because a postponed opening costs more goodwill than a late announcement.

Does Stilfserjoch / Passo dello Stelvio have a glacier?

Yes. Glacier terrain makes the early season more reliable, because the snow layer is supported from below by ice. The summers since 2022 have shown that this is no longer a guarantee either: several Alpine glacier areas have given up summer skiing altogether.
