What sets this ski area apart
Saint-Luc and Chandolin sit on the sunny side of the Val d'Anniviers, high above the Rhone valley. They are no longer municipalities in their own right: on 1 January 2009 all six communes in the valley merged into the municipality of Anniviers, one of the largest in Switzerland by area.
The way into the ski area is unusual. Instead of a gondola, a funicular runs from Saint-Luc up to Tignousa, 1300 metres long, from 1680 to 2180 metres, built in 1993 and opened the following year. Maximum gradient 61 per cent. From the top the link continues across to Chandolin.
Both villages sit high enough that snow cover is rarely the problem. What limits the area is size: 75 kilometres of piste spread over two aspects of the same slope, and anyone wanting more variety will find it further up the valley at Grimentz-Zinal.
