What sets this ski area apart
Evolène lies in the Val d'Hérens, where French is spoken alongside a Franco-Provençal patois that has stayed unusually alive here. The municipality includes Les Haudères, La Sage, La Forclaz, Ferpècle and Arolla; it reaches the Italian border and the summit of the Dent Blanche at 4357 metres.
On 21 February 1999 an avalanche struck the village and killed twelve people. The event still shapes how winter is handled here, and anyone travelling through the valley will see the protective works built since.
The ski area is small and lies away from the main flows of traffic. People who go to the Val d'Hérens are usually not after piste kilometres but after a valley that largely escaped the development boom of the 1960s.
