What sets this ski area apart
Saas-Grund sits at 1560 metres on the valley floor and is the main village of the Saas valley, even if Saas-Fee is better known. The separation of the two goes back a long way: in 1300 the medieval commune of Saas bought the grazing rights to the valley's alps from the Counts of Blandrate; in 1392 Almagell, Fee and Balen split off, and only the Mattmark alp remained the joint property of all four.
Tourism began early and with mountaineering: the Hotel Monte-Rosa in 1850, the Hotel Monte-Moro in 1856, both as bases for high tours. The small Hotel Weissmies, built above the Triftalp in 1894, has served as an Alpine Club hut since 1924.
For skiing, Hohsaas is the counterpart to Saas-Fee on the other side of the valley: fewer pistes, but sitting very high and looking straight across at the four-thousanders of the Mischabel range. Anyone staying in the Saas valley gets both sides on a single valley-wide pass.

Getting there by public transport
Destination stop: Saas-Grund, Unter dem Berg. Fastest connection on a Saturday morning in the currently published timetable, from the open Swiss timetable interface, retrieved 10 August 2026. A guide value, not a timetable: the real journey time depends on when you leave and what you connect to, and winter-only bus services are not yet included.
Worth knowing: this resort is in the Snow’n’Rail scheme, so the lift pass is up to 10 per cent cheaper if you arrive this way. From Bern that is 1 h 40 on the train instead of behind the wheel.
