What sets this ski area apart
Belalp is a terrace on the southern flank of the Unterbächhorn and Sparrhorn, five kilometres north of Naters. A cable car climbs up from Blatten bei Naters at 1300 metres, 1767 metres of slope length for 763 vertical metres, joined in winter by an eight-seat gondola.
With 60 kilometres of piste, Belalp is the fourth-largest ski area in the Upper Valais, run with just three chairlifts and five drag lifts. That is little infrastructure for a lot of terrain, and it is precisely what gives the place its character. One oddity is the ski tunnel at the top station of the Hohstock lift. The valley run down to Blatten doubles as a toboggan track.
Once a year, in January, it gets busy: that is when the Hexenabfahrt takes place, a costumed public ski race. Below lies the 6.5-kilometre Massa gorge with the Gebidem dam, and at 2351 metres stands the monument to the physicist John Tyndall, who studied the Aletsch glacier here in the nineteenth century.
