What sets this ski area apart
Anzère is not a village that grew; it is a drawing-board design. Before 1960 there were five alp huts on this sunny plateau at 1500 metres. In 1961 a group of Swiss and foreign investors founded the Pro Anzère holding company with 15 million francs of share capital, the architect Jean Hentsch laid out the resort, and within roughly twenty years a holiday village had appeared.
The sequence can be read off year by year: the first chalets and two ski lifts in 1963, the gondola to the Pas-de-Maimbré at 2362 metres in 1966, the first apartment blocks in 1967, and by 1976 five more drag lifts, three chairlifts, an indoor pool, tennis courts, an ice rink and four hotels.
The result is a car-free village square ringed by apartment blocks in the jumbo-chalet style, numbered AV 1 to AV 15. Anyone looking for an old Valaisian village core is in the wrong place. Anyone looking for a compact, sunny resort with short walks is in exactly the right one.
