What sets this ski area apart
Splügen lies at 1457 metres in the Rheinwald on the Hinterrhein, at exactly the point where the routes to the Splügen pass and the San Bernardino pass divide. Both were used as links to Italy in Roman times, and the village lived off that transit traffic for centuries.
The name goes back to the Latin spelunca, cave. It is recorded as Speluca in a register of 831, though that survives only in a sixteenth-century copy. East of the village stand the ruins of Splügen castle.
Since 2019 Splügen has no longer been a municipality of its own but belongs, together with Hinterrhein and Nufenen, to the municipality of Rheinwald. The ski area on the Tambo is small but high and snow-reliable, and the A13 motorway runs practically to the door.
