What sets this ski area apart
Savognin sits in the basin of the lower Surses valley, known in German as Oberhalbstein, and the official language here is Surmiran, one of the five Romansh idioms. Until the end of 2015 it was a municipality in its own right; since 2016 it has belonged, together with eight other villages, to the municipality of Surses.
The village's history explains why tourism arrived here late. Transit traffic had crossed the Julier and Septimer passes since Roman times, and the valley lived off it. When the Gotthard railway opened in 1882 that traffic disappeared, and Savognin fell back to the status of a farming village. It only connected to winter tourism from 1960 onwards. The ski area faces the sun and reaches 2713 metres, but the base sits at 1200 metres, and in mild winters it is down there that the season is decided.
