What sets this ski area apart
Bivio lies at the foot of the Julier and Septimer passes, the two crossings that gave it its name: in the first half of the ninth century it appears as stabulum bivio, the inn at the fork. Until 1902 it was officially called Stalla.
Linguistically Bivio is a special case. Along with Tarvisio and Livigno it is the only officially Italian-speaking place north of the main Alpine watershed, and it is regarded as the most linguistically diverse place in Switzerland: Italian, German and Romansh meet here in a very small space.
For skiers, Bivio is known above all for ski touring. The terrain around the highest village in the Surses is wide and open, the altitude is right, and the Julier pass road stays open in winter, which keeps the drive short both from the Engadine and from Chur.
