What sets this ski area apart
Vals is a Walser German language island in the middle of the Romansh Val Lumnezia. The Walser came from the Upper Valais in the fourteenth century and settled the highest valleys of Grisons; the underlying place names are still Romance, and Vals itself comes from val, valley.
In area the municipality is about the size of Liechtenstein, just under 176 square kilometres, and consists of five valleys of which only one is inhabited. Roughly half is meadow and alpine pasture, eight per cent mountain forest, the rest rock and ice. The highest point in which the municipality has a share is the Rheinwaldhorn at 3402 metres.
Vals is known for its thermal baths rather than its ski area, and the Dachberg terrain has stayed correspondingly small. People who come here usually combine the two: a few runs, and afterwards the water the village is known for.
