What sets this ski area apart
The Moléson reaches 2002 metres and stands right on the north-western edge of the Alps, eight kilometres south-south-west of Bulle. That is the reason for the view: to the north and west nothing else stands in the way. The name of the mountain is recorded as early as around 1000 as Moleisum.
In the early twentieth century there were three competing projects for a railway to the summit, one of them from Les Avants in the canton of Vaud across two passes. None was built. Today the mountain is reached in two stages: a funicular from Moléson-Village to Plan-Francey at 1517 metres, then a cable car to the top.
For skiing this is a small area in the Fribourg pre-Alps with a low base. What carries the Moléson is its year-round role as a viewpoint above the Gruyère country.
