The numbers from the Pacific are unambiguous: the weekly Niño 3.4 index stood at +2.1 °C as of 20 July 2026 – clearly El Niño territory. In its official diagnostic discussion of 9 July 2026, the US climate agency NOAA gives the event a 97 per cent probability of persisting into spring 2027, and puts the chance of a very strong event in the October to December 2026 window at 81 per cent. The question everyone wants answered: does that mean snow, or a lack of it?
What El Niño is
In the tropical Pacific, trade winds normally blow from South America towards Asia. They push warm surface water westwards, while cold deep water wells up off Peru. During El Niño those trade winds slacken, the warm water stays in the east, and the Pacific off South America warms up. Because a vast area of ocean is suddenly heating the air differently, atmospheric circulation shifts far beyond the Pacific. The counterpart, with unusually strong trade winds, is called La Niña.
The measurement is the sea surface temperature in the “Niño 3.4” region: from 0.5 °C of anomaly one speaks of El Niño, from 2.0 °C of a very strong event. For North America and the tropics the consequences are well documented – for Europe they are weak and indirect.
The honest answer for the Alps
Anyone forecasting your Alpine winter from the Pacific in July is selling you something. The state of the evidence:
- The ENSO signal reaches Europe only in diluted form. There are too many weather systems between the Pacific and the Alps. Statistical relationships exist (strong El Niño winters show a slight tendency towards a cold late winter/February in central Europe), but they are weak and unreliable.
- What actually decides Alpine snow is the NAO – the North Atlantic Oscillation, the pressure distribution between Iceland and the Azores. It determines whether westerly flow brings snow or high pressure dries the Alps out. And the NAO is practically impossible to forecast months ahead.
- What El Niño reliably does: raise the global temperature level. In an already record-warm climate period, that increases the probability that precipitation at middle elevations falls as rain rather than snow. For resorts below 1,500 m, that is the real story.
What this means for planning your season
- Altitude beats forecasts. If you want reliable skiing in December, book high – glacier resorts and areas with terrain above 2,500 m (overview).
- Use early-bird offers, but stay flexible. Season passes such as the Magic Pass were bought long ago (our comparison); for hotel bookings, flexible rates are worth more than ever.
- Watch the autumn. From October, seasonal models (ECMWF SEAS5, NOAA CFS) slowly become more meaningful for the Alps. We will interpret those runs here in the magazine.
Our conclusion: El Niño 2026/27 is real and strong – but it is a global climate signal, not an Alpine snow report.
