What sets this ski area apart
Leukerbad lies at the very back of the Dala valley, enclosed by the chain running from the Rinderhorn to the Balmhorn with the deep saddle of the Gemmi pass. The hot springs have been known since Roman times, and they are still the reason the place works even when the weather does not.
That setting came at a price. In the eighteenth century the village was hit by avalanches four times, in 1719, 1720, 1756 and 1767, and each time the centre was struck. The oldest hotel, the Maison Blanche, was rebuilt after 1719 as a five-storey stone building. Only once avalanche defences were in place around 1830 did the village grow: by 1850 there were already seven hotels, and in 1885 even an English chapel for the British clientele.
The ski area runs from 1411 up to 2700 metres, with most of the skiing on the Torrent side. People rarely come to Leukerbad for the skiing alone, and that is not a weakness of the ski area but its business model.
