What sets this ski area apart
Les Bugnenets and Les Savagnières lie in the Neuchâtel Jura on the western slope of the Chasseral chain, at the height of the Col des Pontins. This is Jura terrain, not Alpine terrain: wooded ridges, open pasture, gentle shapes and altitudes of around 1200 to 1400 metres.
The area straddles two cantons, Neuchâtel and Bern, and is run jointly. Le Pâquier, the village on the Neuchâtel side, has belonged since 2013 to the merged municipality of Val-de-Ruz, formed out of fifteen former communes.
The Jura works to its own arithmetic: the altitudes are modest, but the cold-air pooling means snow lies longer here than the figures suggest. In a winter with little snow that does not help either, and then it stays shut.
