What sets this ski area apart
At 1506 metres, Bosco/Gurin is the highest village in the canton of Ticino, and it is the canton's only German-speaking municipality. The language is Gurinerdeutsch, a Walser dialect.
Settlement goes back to the thirteenth century: Walser from the Italian Val Formazza, Pomatt in Walser German, came into the upper Rovana valley in 1244, where they found the alp ad Buschum. In 1253 the place is first mentioned as Lo Busco de Quarino. By around 1400 the Walser had bought almost all the land and lived accordingly independently.
The ski area lies on the Grosshorn and the Pizzo Bombögn and is the only one of note in the Vallemaggia. Getting here means driving 35 kilometres from Locarno into a side valley on the Italian border, and that is precisely the point.
