What sets this ski area apart
At 1560 metres, Bellwald is the highest municipality in the Goms and sits on a south-facing slope high above the Rhone valley. The village has been reachable since 1956 by a cable car from the Fürgangen-Bellwald station on the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, and by road only since 1962. The cable car, in other words, arrived six years before the road.
Since 2007 Bellwald has been part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ski area is small, with four lifts, two of them detachable chairlifts, and starts right at the village at 1600 metres.
The name itself tells a story: old records such as apun Belwalt Zblattun from 1374 suggest that Bellwald first referred to the hilltop and only later transferred to the settlement, whose older name disappeared in the process.
