The area runs from 1600 to 2970 metres above sea level, giving around 1,370 metres of vertical. The upper slopes therefore sit at an altitude that usually holds snow reliably even in weaker winters.

What sets this ski area apart
Mürren is car-free and reachable only by railway or cable car, and above it stands the Schilthorn at 2970 metres with its revolving restaurant, Piz Gloria. That the restaurant exists at all is down to a film crew: by 1967 the final cable car section was finished, but the money only stretched to the shell of the summit station. Then the production of On Her Majesty's Secret Service went looking for a location for Ian Fleming's fictional Piz Gloria, and found it here.
Since 13 December 2024 a new cable car has run from Stechelberg up to Mürren, and it is the steepest aerial cable car in the world: a maximum gradient of 159.4 per cent, which is 57.9 degrees. That reduces the trip to the summit to three sections instead of four.
One side agreement is worth noting. Under the name Ein Herz für Gimmelwald, the Schilthornbahn has committed to keeping the old lifts via Gimmelwald running at least hourly until 24 August 2035, so that the hamlet is not cut off.

Getting there by public transport
Destination stop: Mürren (Schilthornbahn). Fastest connection on a Saturday morning in the currently published timetable, from the open Swiss timetable interface, retrieved 10 August 2026. A guide value, not a timetable: the real journey time depends on when you leave and what you connect to, and winter-only bus services are not yet included.
Worth knowing: this resort is in the Snow’n’Rail scheme, so the lift pass is up to 10 per cent cheaper if you arrive this way. From Bern that is 1 h 51 on the train instead of behind the wheel.
