Privacy policy
In short: this portal collects as little data as possible. No advertising networks, no third-party analytics, no sharing with third parties for advertising purposes. We count page views ourselves, without a cookie and without recognising anyone.

What happens when you visit
The site is hosted by Netlify. As with any web server, technically necessary connection data is processed (IP address, time, page requested, browser type). This data serves operation and security and is not used to build profiles.
No third-party analytics services are used, no advertising cookies and no social media plugins. Neither Google Analytics nor anything comparable is embedded, and no request goes out to a third party.
Page views, counted by us
So that we know which articles get read, we count page views ourselves. The report goes to our own server, it is stored at Supabase in the Zurich data centre, and nobody else gets to see it.
Per view we store:
- the path of the page and the language version
- the kind of event: page opened, clicked out, shared, data table expanded, three quarters read
- the domain the visit came from, such as "google" or "direct". The domain only, never the full address, because search terms can appear in it
- the country as a two-letter code
- the device class: phone, tablet or computer
Explicitly not stored: IP address, not even hashed, browser identification (user agent), the full referring address, and any kind of identifier that links two views together. No cookie is set and nothing is kept in your browser.
Two things follow. First, no consent banner is needed, because there is nothing to recognise. Second, we see views, not people: someone who looks at five pages appears five times, and we have no "unique visitors" figure at all.
If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, you are not counted in the first place. We check that before anything is sent.
Opting out
You can also switch it off for this site alone, without changing anything browser-wide: stop counting this browser · count it again
The switch stores a note in your browser. It is the only thing this site keeps there, and it is the opposite of recognising you: the wish not to be counted. It never leaves your device. It applies per browser and per device, and it is lost if you clear site data.
Newsletter
If you subscribe to the newsletter, we store your email address, the chosen language, the date of sign-up and a checksum of your IP address (salted, truncated SHA-256 hash) that exists solely to limit bulk sign-ups. It is used only for sending.
Sign-up is double opt-in: after submitting you receive a confirmation email, and only the click in it activates the address. Without that click we send nothing and delete the entry after 30 days. Storage is with Supabase (data centre in Zurich), sending through the Swiss provider Infomaniak.
Unsubscribing takes one click on the link at the bottom of every email, no questions asked. The address is deleted straight away, not merely deactivated.
Saved list
Saved ski areas are stored locally in your browser only (localStorage). This data never leaves your device and is not visible to us. If you clear your browser storage, the list is gone.
Comments
Current articles can be commented on without an account. In that case we store the comment text, an optional name and the time. No email address is requested or recorded. Anyone signed in comments under their username, and the comment is linked to that account.
In addition we store a checksum of your IP address with each comment (salted, truncated SHA-256 hash). The IP address itself is not stored and cannot be recovered from the checksum. It exists solely to limit bulk spam and is never visible externally. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the service usable and free of spam.
Comments are publicly visible as soon as they are submitted. So do not write anything there you would not say in public, and no details about other people. We reserve the right to delete comments without giving reasons, in particular advertising, insults or unlawful content. There is no obligation on us to publish.
Comments are held in our database at Supabase, see the next section. If you would like a comment of yours removed, a short message to the address above stating the article and the text is enough.
Account
An account is optional. Without one you can read everything and write comments. Creating one requires an email address, a password and a username. Optionally you can add a home resort, ski days last season and a picture symbol.
Publicly visible are the username, the picture symbol, the home resort, the ski days, the month you registered and your own comments. They appear on a profile page anyone can open. Not public is your email address: it serves only for signing in and resetting your password, is never displayed and is not used for advertising. Passwords are not stored in plain text, only as a hash.
Accounts and database run on Supabase. The data is held in their data centre in Switzerland (Zurich). Confirmation emails are sent through the Swiss provider Infomaniak. When you sign in, your browser keeps a session key in local storage so you do not have to type your details on every visit. It is not an advertising cookie and is deleted when you sign out.
An account can be deleted at any time. A short message to the address above is enough; we then delete the account and the profile in full. On request the comments go with it, or they stay without a name attached so that started conversations remain readable. The legal basis for the account data is the performance of the user relationship entered into on registration.
Embedded external services
- CARTO (the "Map" base layer): when a map loads, your IP address is transmitted to CARTO’s servers. The underlying map data comes from OpenStreetMap.
- swisstopo (Swiss topo map and aerial imagery): choosing either of those layers fetches tiles from the Federal Office of Topography, which receives your IP address.
- SLF / WSL (snow measurements): readings from the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research are retrieved when the site is built, so no request goes out from your browser.
- Wikimedia Commons: the resort photos are stored on our own server; nothing is fetched from Wikimedia. Only the source links point there.
Your rights
You have the right to information about the data stored about you and to have it corrected or deleted. An informal message is enough.
This policy describes the actual technical state of the portal and is updated whenever that changes.
